7632 25 May 1984 @ 1130 --- research-mab 5-25-84 Cistern ~1130 MDT Temp=68ºC, crater empty down to vent following yesterday’s eruption of Steamboat Geyser at ~0445 MDT. The major eruption of Steamboat awakened employees in the Norris housing area at ~0500 AM who quickly threw coats over their sleep wear (pj’s etc) & came over to witness early portions of the steam phase.

5325 28 Aug 1978 @ 1500 --- research-mab 08/28/1978 1500 hrs. Cistern has started to refill slightly after dropping almost 2 feet or more. It was not measured Sunday, but looked like it had dropped more from Saturday. Water in Cistern is boiling at 201ºF out of the N end of pool.

5327 25 Aug 1978 @ 1000 --- research-mab 08/25/1978 Steamboat steam phase has about finished. Between 9:15 and 9:45 there was a considerable decrease in the forcefulness of the steam. The boardwalk this morning had ¼ inch of ice on it. Cistern Spring has only drained 18 inches. There is a good bit of scum on top of the water. When I went down to steamboat at 8 a.m. all sorts of people were out there expecting it to go off again. The rumor has circulated through the park that Steamboat will erupt each morning at 8.

5329 23 Aug 1978 @ 1200 23 Aug 1978 @ 2320 research-mab 08/23/1978 Cistern 1200 (~ 8-10 splashes 20’) At 2320 Cistern spring had only dropped 16 inches. A good amount of runoff was coming from Steamboat’s channels – all from rain mist falling out of the steam cloud in 35ºF air.

The jump lasted less than 15 minutes and then dropped back to 201º - 202º. What happened? Pulled the tape and reset it on time at 9:10 am. Reading back on the tape I found another temperature jump several weeks old. But that one took several hours to taper back down to normal
