Comments: | Eruption was preceded by River pause lasting 17 minutes and one Bottom Vent eruption lasting 30 seconds. There is no record of Main Vent splashing during the eruption cycle. Upper Mortar initiated the eruption 24 minutes after the start of River. There was a strong, sustained surge from Upper Mortar that lasted about 20 seconds, followed a few seconds later by a voluminous 5-foot splash in Main Vent. Then there was nothing for a few more seconds before East Vent finally shot up, followed immediately by Lower Mortar and then Upper Mortar and Main Vent. Fan put several strong surges across the path, but the eruption was Mortar dominated, with Lower Mortar being particularly strong. Being just after sunrise, there was a rainbow across Fan and Mortar for most of the eruption. |
