#27 is erupting 3 to 4 feet with a fan shaped spray. The rocks and sinter fragments that were surrounding the vent last year are now scattered several feet to the south, revealing part of a smooth sinter vent. Water can be heard gurgling and surging at depth in addition to the typical, loud discharge of steam during “quiet” intervals that range from 2 to 21 minutes.
The vigor of the activity mirrored that of #28 and eruptions occurred when 28 was having its strongest eruption at the end of a cycle. Eruptions began suddenly and fizzled out after 10 to 20 seconds of play.
#28 was observed to have intervals as long as 1min 39sec. The crater is larger than it was the previous September and it was still producing runoff during much of its cycle, perhaps half the volume of #23.
#23, Mickey Geyser, was not significantly different from previous visits. It is still bubbling and splashing to several inches, with activity levels rising and falling with that of #27 and #28.
The easternmost vent of #26 is bubbling continuously through sinter pebbles that are suspended in the vent. This is an increase in activity from the previous September and the sinter pebbles are a new addition. |
