19302 30 May 2021 @ 0925 --- research-mab 30 May 2021 @ 0925 BEN VL ECHINUS See Note under Steamboat Emerald cloudy this morning (low wind) but cleared up quite a bit by the time I left. It seems like it has been alternating btwn clear and cloudy each day for a while. Echinus has also been alternating clear and murky each day. It seems that whenever ES is clear, Echinus has been that cloudy filthy brown color from last year, and visa versa. The one note where I saw something sort of interesting from a few days ago, ES was clear and Echinus was murky. https://geysertimes.org/note.php?id=17268
17158 21 May 2021 @ 0820 --- cb pool is 6" below the high water mark on the pools north rim. 2 boiling points and the pt to the south is blooping 6 - 8" high. un changed since last observation
17030 09 May 2021 @ 1152 --- cb good overflow. The 2 main vents are very active with a good roiling boil to ~4".
16987 05 May 2021 @ 0415 05 May 2021 @ 0505 JarnoO 6 spikes. The last one reached ±39½°C before it dropped. Temperature fluctuations decreased in the ±12 hours prior and remained decreased until logger upload (±1300 MDT). Note that the loggers are in MST.
16789 24 Dec 2020 @ 1200 --- JarnoO Very, very low temperature fluctuations the past few days. During the regular, 12½-day cycle, large fluctuations (±10°C from average) would have been occurring by now, yet the fuctuations have only become smaller and smaller barring about 2 hours just after noon December 22. I don't think this is temperature-related - large fluctuations have happened regardless of temperature. Rather, it could be the temperature sensor got dislodged with the second eruption this year or a change in activity. The latter appears to be more likely as Echinus had small fluctuations recorded between September and October 2019; furthermore, the event after #2 this year did not result in a long "valley", while the second event did even though its maximum temperature was lower than that of the first event. See Echinus' notes on December 17 for those spikes.
16786 17 Dec 2020 @ 2322 18 Dec 2020 @ 0348 JarnoO Another spike today (#2 post-eruptions). This one started @ 2322:46, when temperature rose 1.5°C to 34.0°C. Peak of 45.2°C was reached @ 2328:46, followed by a drop which reached its minimum @ 0206:46 at 10.5°C. Along with the remarkably long drop following the spike, recovery (time between drop minimum and first ≥30.0°C data point) to average temperature took longer than usual, taking until 0348:46 before the first ≥30.0°C temperature was recorded. The past months recovery from similar spikes (except for the first one in October) took only minutes, yet this one needed the better part of 2 hours to do so. Also noteworthy is that this is the first spike this "active phase" (≤October 2020 - onw.) to occur in a period _after_ spikes (in this case, eruptions) are expected to occur, where Echinus tends to have less-than-usual temperature fluctuations - i.e. the temperature hangs around its average of ±30°C for several days - before it widens up again for the next round of spikes.
16785 17 Dec 2020 @ 1013 17 Dec 2020 @ 1239 JarnoO After two eruptions (2020-12-16 2149:08 E and 2020-12-17 0709:08 E), Echinus spiked again, this time only to up to 53.0°C. Spike started @ 1013:08 when temperature rose to 45.5°C, sustained above 50°C for three data points (6 minutes, 50.7°C, 53.0°C and 52.6°C, respectively), after which the temperature dropped quickly to below 30°C (1031:08 first datapoint) and then slowly to its minimum of 11.6°C @ 1213:08. Recovery appeared to be slow, with it still not having reached a stable average 26 minutes later, at which point the data ends. [Update] Temperature reached stability @ 1256:46. Another "mini spike" occurred @ 1300:46, when temperature rose to 31.4°C and reached its peak @ 1316:46 (34.2°C). Drop was, consequently, small, only to 28.5°C and had recovered two data points later (4 minutes).
16780 04 Dec 2020 @ 2124 04 Dec 2020 @ 2312 JarnoO Three "slow spikes" during this timeframe. First spike started @ 2124:00 (29.4°C) and peaked at 37.0°C @ 2144:00. Secondary spikes 2126:00 (31.5°C), 2134:00 (36.3°C) and 2152:00 (32.1°C). Temperature dropped to 24.7°C @ 2156:00. Second spike started @ 2158:00 (30.6°C) and peaked at 44.5°C (2216:00). Secondary spike @ 2204:00 (38.7°C). Temperature dropped to 24.9°C (2222:00). Third and final spike started @ 2224:00 (31.0°C) and peaked at 49.1°C (2242:00). Secondary spike @ 2228:00 (37.4°C). Temperature had dropped to 10.8°C @ 2302:00 and by 2312:00 had subsequently recovered at 33.5°C.
16511 22 Nov 2020 @ 1858 22 Nov 2020 @ 1938 JarnoO Three spikes (of which two were longer than usual) between these times. First spike peaked @ 1902:12 (43.5°C), from 36.5°C 1858:12. Remained above 40°C for 4 data points (8 minutes), before dropping to 32.2°C @ 1910:12. Remained above 30°C until next spike. Spike started @ 1918:12, when temperature rose to 38.8°C from 32.5°C and reached its peak @ 1920:12 at 43.6°C. Temperature dropped to around 40°C and persisted for 2 data points (4 minutes), before rising sharply to 49.4°C @ 1926:12. Temperature subsequently dropped to 17.7°C in 6 data points (12 minutes) and recovered to near-normal (±30°C) @ 1944:12, 3 data points (6 minutes) after minimum.
16507 10 Nov 2020 @ 1818 10 Nov 2020 @ 1906 JarnoO Two spikes recorded by the logger. First one starting @ 1818:10, peaking at 48.7°C @ 1824:10. Dropped in 6 data points (12 minutes) to 10.4°C. Second spike started @ 1838:10 and peaked at 54.5°C @ 1846:10. Dropped in 7 data points (14 minutes) to 19.8°C, though it rose 1.6°C at the 12 minute mark before it dropped again to the aforementioned temperature. Temperature fluctuations have been above average for several days, before narrowing in the afternoon. Same thing happened with previous spikes observed.
16491 30 Oct 2020 @ 1255 --- steve At Echinus it doesn’t look like it erupted. The Cyanobacteria in the runoff channels looks intact and the grass on the edge of the pool is not knocked down. The water is mostly clear with only light opalescence. I wonder what it did? It is boiling strongly from the South vent, less so from the North vent.
16487 30 Oct 2020 @ 0418 30 Oct 2020 @ 0506 JarnoO [EDIT: Forgot to compensate for DST] Three "slow spikes" on the logger in this timespan. The first started @ 0418:08 and only peaked @ 0426:08 (45.1°C) after staying at above average temperatures (±34.8°C in the hour preceding) those 8 minutes. Dropped in 3 data points to 26.4°C @ 0430:08. Second spike started @ 0432:08 (28.7°C) and reached peak @ 0444:08 (48.7°C). Drop in 4 data points to 17.6°C @ 0452:08. Third and final spike started @ 0454:08, with temperature rising immediately to 35.7°C and reaching peak @ 0458:08 (49.6°C). Drop in 4 data points to 18.4°C @ 0506:08. Temperature fluctuations before these set of spikes were abnormally high the previous 3¼ days (8½ days if the intermezzo of about 24 hours on the 25th is also counted), with less than usual fluctuations in the ±18 hours immediately before the spikes.
16420 13 Oct 2020 @ 2119 13 Oct 2020 @ 2147 JarnoO NOTE: YVO logger output is by default in MST. I have adjusted the time to MDT (+1 hour). Two spikes to >45°C. First one @ 2121:54 to 47.7°C (with first rise two minutes earlier to 41.2°C, from 33.3°C) and dropped thereafter to 17.9°C @ 2129:54. Second spike @ 2139:54 to 45.3°C for two datapoints (2139:54 & 2141:54), which rose from 29.8°C @ 2135:54 and 37.5°C 2 minutes later. Spikes were preceded and followed by generally less-than-average temperature fluctuations starting from ±1000 up until ±30 minutes before these spikes.
16338 06 Oct 2020 @ 1200 --- cb good overflow. 2 boiling points are breaking the surface to ~2" with approximately a 6" diameter ring. There are a few (3) boiling points on the south east edge (toward the upper platform) that are roiling.
16275 26 Sep 2020 @ 1644 --- cb Pool is overflowing. The 2 areas that boil have a weak boil that is barely breaking the pools surface. Yesterday, and most of this week, these 2 areas had a significant, blooping boil.
14953 10 Jul 2020 @ 1545 --- cb Pool is high with a weak, almost flat boil.
14613 12 Jun 2020 @ 0909 --- ypcaribou Developing terraced deposits at runoff edge (similar to Cistern but on a much smaller scale). Runoff at about half of what it was on 06/06/20.
14527 03 Jun 2020 @ 1510 --- cb looks much the same as last year. Small boil in the center of the pool and one on the east side. Nice red color on the edges melding into more blue/green toward the center. Nice overflow with little debris in the overflow channels.
13257 14 Aug 2019 @ 1635 --- cb same overflow that I've seen. Pool at pretty much the same level. But, the 2 boiling points have a diminished boil. Not nearly as intense a boil as I've seen, smaller in diameter and height.
29128 03 Aug 2019 @ 1200 --- research-mab 8/3/2019 - no time noted -Echinus is clear, all colors are visible - Black Pit Spring is quite audible
12921 01 Aug 2019 @ 1017 --- cb pool is back in typical overflow for this season.
12899 31 Jul 2019 @ 1614 --- cb low pool. barely in overflow. Middle vent moderate boil and bloops (my new official term!) to 4"+. side vent boil is weaker -1/2" - 2" at best.
12852 28 Jul 2019 @ 0739 --- ypcaribou Full, water remarkably clear with red rocks showing underneath throughout. Except very middle too steamy to see.
11004 19 Apr 2019 @ 1010 --- ypcaribou Full, clear, bubbly. Looks like it did last fall.
10948 15 Feb 2019 @ 0000 17 Feb 2019 @ 0500 JarnoO Larger-than-usual temperature fluctuations for approximately at least this timespan. Kind-of reminds me of the logger trace before its 2017-2018 active phase.
10945 08 Feb 2019 @ 1800 08 Feb 2019 @ 2100 JarnoO Several spikes during this timeframe, ranging from ~40°C to ~48°C. All followed by drops ranging from ~32°C to ~15°C.
10773 20 Dec 2018 @ 1400 --- JarnoO Over the past few weeks it seems that Echinus was spiking regularly (once per ~5-6 days?) up to ~45°C+ multiple times (most recent one on Dec. 16 around noon reached ~55°C). I may also note that around the 13th of December, the temperature dropped, what seems to be quite drastically, actually, to below 0°C (per Nuphar Lake Logger, this was ambient temperature initially at ~-20°C, then increased on Echinus Logger to just below 0°C, after which it decreased to ~-20°C again). Seems to have held for a few hours, after which the temperature went back to normal (between 20 and 40°C)
10754 24 Nov 2018 @ 2100 25 Nov 2018 @ 0000 JarnoO It appears there were a couple of spikes during this time span, reaching between ~42°C and ~44°C on at least 2 or 3 occassions. Drops to between ~16°C and ~12°C seemed to be more common - counted 5 or 6 on the 7-day graph. Temperature fluctuated between a narrower range (avg. appx. ~7°C [w/o diurnal variations], sometimes a drop to as low as ~23°C) before these spikes than after (~10°C [w/o diurnal variations]). It appears Echinus kept the narrower range between after the 16th November 2018 spikes and this series of spikes.
10740 16 Nov 2018 @ 1500 16 Nov 2018 @ 1600 JarnoO Three spikes (roughly at 30-minute intervals) occurred during approximately this time. Spike 1: ~46°C, spike 2: ~51°C, spike 3: ~48°C. All were followed by a drop to about 23°C. I may also note that in the few hours before the spikes, it seemed the temperature was at a rather stable ~36°C and increased slightly before the first spike.
10180 13 Sep 2018 @ 1234 --- cb Pool is in a mediocre overflow. Water is trickling over the terraces . Both vents have a mediocre boil about 8" in diameter and only reaching a few inches in height.
9870 25 Aug 2018 @ 0920 --- cb pool level is higher and has a nice overflow as opposed to 8/22 post Steamboat.
9835 22 Aug 2018 @ 1842 --- cb barely overflowing with many rocks and ridges exposed. a mediocre 2 vent boil.
9385 01 Aug 2018 @ 0941 --- MAB Two vents visibly active - strong SE vent boil. Did not go to upper platform to look at color or floating things.
9304 26 Jul 2018 @ 1530 --- MAB A sheet of something organic was seen floating sub-surface. As we looked at it and tried to discern if it was a trick of lighting, it moved and changed shape. Similar to the 'leather' seen in features elsewhere. maybe.
19290 15 Jul 2018 @ 1825 --- research-mab 7-15-2018 CB ECHINUS 1825 See Note under Steamboat Vixen platform & runoff channel is wet, water pooled in its tube but I did not see an eruption in the 15 minutes I observed. Pearl still has a yellow hue. Porkchop water is back up to the rim of the pool. Green dragon runoff is again clear however the runoff channels are coated in brown. Yellow funnel has no visible water but I can hear deep grumbling with splashing down deep. Echinus water level is good with nice runoff and a weak 2 vent boil. (hum!) Crater Spring water is LOW and murky brown/gray. Emerald Spring is the same, clear, green with weak convection waves. https://geysertimes.org/note.php?id=9202
9046 06 Jul 2018 @ 1438 --- udo Appears the same before and after Steamboat with perhaps same amount of runoff. 2 vents have continuous doming boils.
9032 03 Jul 2018 @ 0700 --- JarnoO Spike up to ~49°C around this time, followed by a drop to ~24°C. No subsequent spikes as of writing.
19277 27 Jun 2018 @ 1800 --- research-mab 6-27-2018 ECHINUS – 1800 CB see NOTE under Steamboat Vixen is back to more regular play. The steam vent by Vixen is quieter. Pearl has bubbles breaking the surface. Pork chop is down about 4" from the rim. Green dragon is putting out chocolate brown runoff. Yellow funnel is way low, muddy brown and turbulent. Blue mud steam vents water/mud is not visable. Crater Spring water level is low as is Echinus. Echinus run off channel is dry in many areas. This back basin is much the same as last night except for Vixen. sorry for the long note! Forgot about Emerald. . . cuz it is the same! Boiling in the East thumb, green and fairly clear. https://geysertimes.org/note.php?id=8912
8882 21 Jun 2018 @ 0905 --- Polly A few inches down from lip. I can hear a varying boil.
8809 20 Jun 2018 @ 0930 --- mdschwarz Continuous doming boil over the vent for the few minutes I watched it, large enough to make splashing sounds
8795 19 Jun 2018 @ 1800 --- cb increased water level, overflow and boil.
7960 15 Mar 2018 @ 0557 --- JarnoO Spiked on the fourteenth until at least this data download repetitively up to 50°C. 2018-03-14: @ 1517 to 50.1°C, dropped to 14.7°C; @ 2059 to 49.4, dropped to 15.2°C (had three distinctive spikes, @ 2055 to 44.2°C, the one mentioned earlier and @ 2107 to 26.6°C while temperature was dropping). 2018-03-15: @ 0239 to 43.3°C, dropped to 14.9°C; @ 0523 to 47.4°C followed by another one to 40.6°C, dropped to 13°C after the second spike.
7954 06 Mar 2018 @ 0458 --- JarnoO Spiked three times since 0200 (@ 0204, 0404, 0428). 0204 reached 37.8°C and dropped to 23.8°C, 0404 reached 44.8°C and dropped to 8.1°C and 0428 reached 46.9°C and dropped to 17.3°C.
