Note:Aug 3 1982 Steamboat had a period of minor play at 1128 that had everyone present jumping for joy. From the lower platform we saw both vents have steady vertical play upwards of 75’ high. It lasted for at least 60 seconds – enough time to take out my camera, get 3 photos, and admire the spectacle. However… the North Vent, instead of climbing, quit with an abruptness that was very disappointing. A big “OHHHH” escaped from the crowd. The south vent stayed at about 50’ for a few more seconds, then it too stopped. This burst was as impressive, if not more so, than the burst that started the May 20 eruption. For the remainder of the afternoon, Steamboat’s minor play was feeble by comparison, with little combined activity (of both vents. If Steamboat’s behavior is the same now as before the 7/7 disturbance, minor play of this sort means an eruption may come in the next few days – Talk About optimism. {Suzanne & Paul St}.
