Note: | August 29, 1982 - {0846 onward} - Steamboat – still splashing heavily, much like yesterday – frequent high strong bursts from south vent, sometimes joined by high splashing from north vent. Very strong splashes at 8:46, 10:36, 11:21, 11:49, but no superbursts all day. By the way, what we Steamboat starers call a superburst isn’t simply a heavy splash. A superburst is a minor eruption in which both vents simultaneously throw up steady columns of water, visually accompanied by much cheering from the spectators. A typical super burst (I’ve only seen 5 of them) is over 50’ in height and 30 sec duration, and sends a flood of runoff down the east runoff channel all the way to Tantalus Creek. |
