Extent of Erosion
On the slope immediately to the N.W. and about 70 feet from the geyser it appears that almost 1 inch of the top soil has been wiped away. The roots of the trees, previously just barely showing, are now clearly visible and protrude about the hillside in a trellis pattern. An inspection at the head of the new drainage channels suggests many inches up to a foot of deepening. That there is definitely a perceptible change in the area cannot be denied.
A small branch freshly knocked or broken from a tree (possibly by the eruption) was noted in a wet area about 100 yards from the vent in a northerly direction.
On snow patches, North & East (50-70 yards out) clay and gravel particles from the eruption coated the snow with a thin veneer. One main puddle of water was still observed 12 hours after the eruption.
