At 9:04 Ebony gurgled and splashing about 1 ft Filled to the top of its orifice, scaring away a varying hare occupying the same fallen tree as the “Easter Bunny” did when alive (this appeared to be somewhat larger). Ebony did not overflow, but at 9:05 Bear Den erupted for 1 ½ minutes, spewing 5 or 6 times up to about 40 feet. With no breeze the water fell on the right-hand downslope (westward) side of the hill, on several pines in the process of dying. |

At 7:28 pm Ebony was due for another minor eruption. Just previous to this as during all other times there had been intermittent moderate bubbling and occasional boiling. The water started to rapidly rise and quickly reached the level where at all other times the minor eruptions with their vigorous boiling began. However, upon reaching the level at 7:28 the water became very quiet and still – no bubbling or boiling at all. The water remained in this quiet state until 8:05 pm with almost no activity at all. Shortly after 8:05 the surface of the pool of water in the vent began to rise again but in addition, be practically covered with superheated boiling. At 8:06 pm the major eruption began, 87 minutes after the last minor eruption.
By this time it was too dark to use the brunton compass to measure the height of eruption for the moon had not yet risen. However, by what little light there was, it is certain that Ebony played well in excess of 40 feet high.
Rocks were thrown up into the air with one, approximately, 8 x 13 inches in size, seen heaved up about 10 feet.
The style of play was similar to the one observed on March 13th, being a series of fountain-like bursts. They start out in rapid progression at the beginning of the eruption (after the pool has started to overflow) and gradually slow down throughout their period of play until the end. It is at the point of the pool’s overflowing that the geyser starts having tall bursts. |

Ebony (continued) All of the minor eruptions from 12:16 to 6:39 were followed by the water draining only part way – generally 1 to 1 ½ feet above the narrowest part of the vent. The timing of the durations of the minor eruptions and the major eruption at 8:06 pm was based on the same definitions used yesterday. After 2:33 pm no additional measurements were made to determine how much time was required for the water in the vent to drain down to its lowest level because a white snowshoe rabbit moved in to rest under one of the nearby sinter encrusted logs. It was left undisturbed so that the visitors could have the privilege of seeing &photographing him. Someone claimed it was the “Easter Bunny”! After posing for more than 16 people and staying in one spot less than 20 feet from the vent of Ebony for more than 4 ½ hours the snowshoe casually wandered off at 7:45 pm. |

The close relationship between Ebony and Bear Den was seen when water was rising in both vents, within 3 feet of the top in Ebony and 4 feet in Bear Den. When I came above Ebony this morning I noticed that the water level was high in the mouth of this geyser. The level continued rising and activity became more vigorous until Bear Den began erupting when the water once again drained back down. Although there was no run-off from Ebony only a slight amount more rise in the water level would have been necessary in order to have run-off. This might account for the lost marker on May 19,1982 |

Averaged about one eruption / day. Went as long as 3 days occasionally. If Bear Den erupted about the time Ebony was ready to erupt, Ebony often delayed several hours. Sometimes, both erupted at same time. Bear Den erupted about 2 times for every eruption of Ebony.
Ebony averaged about 15-25 ft. on any eruption that I observed this summer. (JB) Got a water sample at Ebony during and eruption (Sept 23.) for Bob Fournier to analyze. Could see no predictable pattern to Ebony. Often surged H2O 1-3 ft at frequent intervals for several hours before erupting, and then might not erupt if Bear Den played. Other times, appeared very calm and suddenly erupted. |

Replaced markers on Ebony & Bear Den 3:30p
Bear Den erupts several times a day. Most eruptions completely remove the marker below the Y formed by the runoff of Ebony & Bear Den. I think Ebony has been erupting less frequently than we have been led to believe this summer. We were under the impression that one marker would suffice, believing that Bear Den did not produce enough water to remove the large marker below the Y. |
