Abyss is still very hot. Lots of bubbles along the edge and in the middle of the pool - increasing and decreasing as I watched, though I didn't take times down due to the volume of steam. There were little "dimples" in the water - tiny little whirlpools - especially on the edge of upwelling water. I haven't seen those before. Plus, without many people, I could hear very soft thumps occasionally. They randomly occurred in the time I was there and were best heard from the boardwalk spur side of the pool. In addition, the pools "Above Abyss" (across the boardwalk spur) had slightly higher water levels and there was evidence of runoff channels in the dirt, though the water level while I was there was below overflow. The trees that started to die in that area looked no more stressed than they have over the past few weeks, so no change there. |

Bubbles more vigorous on this week's visit. Welling up on the side of the spur boardwalk more often than in the middle - accompanied by bubbles. Still blue, hot and probably waiting for the park to close to do something. |

Abyss is still hot. Most of the bubbling comes from one spot on the West end of the Pool and one spot in the middle of the South side. Convection currents are sometimes visible in the pool. Overflow is in two places, the East end and the North side. For the time I watched it the overflow appeared steady |

Bubbles are still rising in many points along the edge. The air temp was warm enough to see the surface of the pool and there's still good upwelling of water. However, there weren't any bubbles rising from the center of the pool while I was there. The trees across the boardwalk from Abyss have more orange needles on them. There was more steam coming from Abyss than Black Pool. |

Too much steam today to see much upwelling of water, but I occasionally got glimpses of it. Bubbles continue to rise encouragingly along the edge. The area above Abyss (across the spur boardwalk) was more vigorous with a splash from the largest opening there to 1 foot. The trees that are dying across the main boardwalk from Abyss don't look any more orange than they did last week. |

Before leaving the basin, I checked back on Abyss Pool. The bubbles had increased in size again and the welling up was stronger with the new (to me) addition of small bubbles rising with the welling up. |

While on this first look at Abyss while at West Thumb, the bubbles still rose along the edge, but were smaller than before. Welling up continues. The "Area Above Abyss" (across the spur of boardwalk) has potentially five springs there - three are open with boiling water. Two others are still closed with dirt. The largest of these is more vigorous than on my last visit on Sept 2. Also, there are trees across the main boardwalk from these pools Above Abyss have some orange needles and appear to be dying. Rangers said this was a very recent development. |

Abyss is still hot and overflowing. To me it appears the bubbling on the East and South sides of the pool is somewhat stronger and the overflow a bit more. The grass around the pool is still healthy and undamaged. |

I came back to Abyss Pool a few times this afternoon on my walk(s) around West Thumb and the surface showed nearly continual upwelling of water with occasional bubbles showing in the center of the pool. The upwelling was stronger than in the past couple of weeks. The bubbles seemed a bit more strong along the edge. Near the overflow by the catch basin had occasional bubbles rising that weren't rising as often as in other spots, but looked larger than they did in the past couple of weeks. Three of the five or six vents above Abyss (across from the boardwalk spur) are open with boiling water. The water level in these pools are the same as in the past couple of weeks. |

Abyss is hot, blue-green, and bubbling at several spots around the rim. There are also weak bubbles in the middle of the pool. I don’t know if the bubbles show boiling or not. The pool is overflowing in two spots. I’m not sure but the bubbling may be weakly cyclic. It is the hottest I have seen in several decades. |

Boiling along the edge continues with some of the bubbles being fist-sized. Bubbles from the center of the pool were nearly continuous as was the upwelling of water. Just as it paused, it would start again. Pauses were about every two minutes. There were more spots of bubbles rising in the center section. Steam rising from Abyss was almost always stronger than that from Black Pool. Boiling continues from the vents above Abyss Pool (across from the spur boardwalk), but the water level there remains the same as over the past couple of weeks. |

Boiling continues at various points along the edge closest to the boardwalk. Some streams of bubbles are fist-sized. Still seeing intermittent fist-sized bubbles from the center as well and some nice welling up of water. No small microbe chunks seen at all on this visit. The bottom is not clearly visible due to turbidity of the water. The area above abyss (across from the spur part of the boardwalk) still has three of five vents showing boiling water, but the water levels there don't look any higher than it was on August 4, 2024. |

Almost as blue as I've ever seen it in the past. The vent at the bottom is not yet clearly visible. I'm not sure if that's due to microbes still down there or just the turbidity of the water. I did see one or two very small chunks of microbe mat rising, but certainly not as much as my last visit in early July. Boiling has increased in intensity along the edge - larger bubbles consistently coming to the surface in more places, but in the time I was there, I didn't see the heavy cyclic boiling in the center - that's not to say it's not doing that, I suspect it is. I only observed occasional bubbles from the center as well as occasional upwelling. Also, the area above abyss with 4 or 5 vents has boiling water in most. I have heard there is a thought that this might also connect to Abyss. The boiling here was stronger than I've seen in many years - I think the last time I saw one vent boiling (not all) was in 2014. |

Hot and blue, some small bits of bacteria floating around. Overflowing nicely out of the back right side and also out of the front right corner. Bubbles coming from one area close to the main boardwalk, and all along the rim closest to the boardwalk spur. Didn't stay long to see if it was periodically boiling from the center |

Heating continues at Abyss, but at a bit slower of a pace. It is decidedly a teal blue than in the middle between teal green and teal blue. Chunks of microbes still float up with upwelling of water. The vent at the bottom is not yet visible - perhaps because of the microbe chunks - but it is still cloudy down there, but more clear than on July 2. Abyss gave off more steam than Black Pool. There was a steady stream of larger bubbles near the edge of pool on the side closer to Skinny Geyser. These were about baseball sized today - larger than on the 2nd. Bubbles rose from the center of the pool at 1301 (D=?), 1312 (D=? - these bubbles were smaller and closer to the catch basin by the overflow), 1317 (D=15s), 1320 (D=5s), 1325 had an increase in steam where I couldn't see the surface of the water. 1327 (D=? Steam obscured the view), 1329 (2 bubbles rose), 1331 (D=5s), 1335 (D=15s), 1344 (D=10s), 1345 (1 bubble), 1348 (D=15s), 1352 (D=? Visitor asking questions), 1357 (D=15s), 1359 (D=5s), 1406 (D=15s), 1409 (D=15s), 1414 (D=15s), 1416 (D=? Getting ready to end observation time). Since I am not set up to accurately time the duration of the bubbles, I would count - with an estimate of seconds and would put either 5,10 or 15 seconds to represent shorter, medium and longer times of bubbling. Upwelling was also documented and generally was noticed about every minute or two with a couple of longer pauses. Significant upwelling that filled the entire pool happened at 1351 and 1412. |

Abyss continues to heat. Color is lighter and many visitors called it blue. I would have categorized it as a teal right between blue and green. Rangers roving there said it was definitely green yesterday. The steam from Abyss matched that coming from Black Pool. Welling up was seen often and brought with it chunks of microbe mats floating up with it. One lady was convinced something was swimming in there. Bubbles seen along the edge including the ledge at the end of the spur of boardwalk where the rangers give their talks. Bubbles are overall larger than on Sunday. Took times of bubbles. Seen at 1458 (first recorded), 1504 (D=5s), 1508 (D=5s), 1513 (D=5s), 1516 (D=5s), 1517(D=?), 1519 - no bubbles seen, but a large upwelling of water that covered a good chunk of the pool), 1525 (upwelling of water only), 1534 bubbles (D=15s), 1537 (D=15 s). From there, upwelling was seen, but no bubbles until 1632 when I left the area. |

The edge of Abyss Pool had fewer microbes than earlier this morning. Lots of small bits of microbes floating in the water. Bubbles along the edge in three places, larger bubbles rising from the center. I saw good welling up of water. Based on how much the wash area had dried on this windy afternoon, I would guess that the surge that happened might have occurred sometime in the previous 24-36 hours from tonight’s observation. The last time I saw this behavior, the color was blue. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Abyss clear up this week and turn green or even blue with how fast things can shift at West Thumb. |

Overflowing not only from the typical channel by the little catch basin, but also in a gap in the sinter on the far long side. Damp soil all the way to King Geyser might indicate significant cycling. Never seen this much wash in 19 years of observing. Still dark in color with some microbes sloughing off. |

While still looking quite black, the water level has risen a bit since my last visit a couple of weeks ago. The water is just beginning to fill the catch basin near the point of overflow. Water was a few inches above the line of microbes. The ephemeral spring up by the parking lot (across the boardwalk from "Fake Fumarole") doesn't appear to have sent water down under the boardwalk all the way to Abyss and Black Pool this year. (Or at least since access to West Thumb this year) That's a help. |
